At an altitude of between 800 and 1500m, nature is surprisingly wild. You will enjoy walking and rambling in a landscape of volcanic hillocks, the most famous of which, Mont Gerbier de Jonc towers over the many rivulets which give birth to the River Loire. In the past, on its hillsides, there were slate-like stones, generally used as roofing tiles. In this region, the water is unpredictably mischievous: it springs up and cascades at the Ray Pic, forms crater lakes such as the deep Lac d'Issarlès, and flows from the earth at 53°C at the thermal spa of Saint-Laurent-les-Bains. |
